Where to stay in Luxor: the two banks

The choice that matters most is the river. The Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the other necropolis sites are on the west bank. The larger city, with more hotels, restaurants and shops, is on the east bank. Staying on the west bank saves a crossing, while the east bank gives you more choice in town.

Neither side is better in general. It depends on how much of your trip is on the west bank and how you will cross. If you are unsure, compare your plan against the West Bank tours, because many state where they pick you up.

For most visitors who spend several days on the west bank, a place near the ferry landing is the simplest base. If you want a large choice of restaurants and plan to cross each morning, the east bank works well.

What to know about each area

The practical differences.

West bank near the ferry landing

This is convenient for crossings. The ferry from the dock in front of Luxor Temple runs from 06:00 to 23:00, and motorboats wait beside it. Being on the west side means no river crossing before you set out for the valley.

West bank, village and farmland

Places further inland suit a quieter stay near the necropolis. Do not read "west bank" as walking distance to the Valley of the Kings, because most stays need a car, a bike or a driver to get to the entrance. Ask how far the nearest boat is and whether the property offers a boat service.

East bank, Corniche and city

The east bank puts you near the main hotels and restaurants. To reach the valley you cross by ferry or motorboat, or take the road bridge about 12 km south of the city, so allow the extra time. The getting there page compares the options and typical prices.

A cruise ship instead

A Nile cruise is a different way to travel, with the bed and meals on board. For that style, see where to stay along the Nile.

Questions to ask before you book

These matter more than the district name.

How far is the ferry or the bridge?

Ask for the distance and the usual transfer. A property that looks close on a map may still need a road transfer, and an east bank hotel may be next to the river.

Motorboats on the Nile bank at Luxor

Is a boat or driver service offered?

Some places arrange the crossing or a car for early starts. Ask what the service covers and whether it works for a 06:00 opening.

What is nearby to eat?

The west bank has less choice of restaurants and shops than the city. Check whether meals are on offer at the property.

Can I stay longer?

If you add Hatshepsut's temple and other sites, a west bank base saves repeat crossings. See the best time to visit before you fix dates, because summer needs early starts.

For hotels and neighborhoods across the whole city, where to stay in Luxor covers the wider picture.

Where to stay: frequently asked questions

Should I stay on the west bank or the east bank?

The west bank puts you on the same side as the valley and the temples. The east bank gives a wider choice of hotels and restaurants but needs a crossing. Choose by how much of your trip is on the west bank.

Can I walk to the Valley of the Kings from a west bank hotel?

Do not assume so. West bank only means the same side of the river. Ask the property for the distance and plan on a car, a driver or a bike.

How do I cross the Nile from the east bank?

By public ferry from the dock in front of Luxor Temple, by motorboat beside it, or over the road bridge about 12 km south of the city. See the getting there page for typical prices in 2026.

Is it better to stay near the ferry?

For a west bank base, a place near the ferry landing is practical for crossings. Check the distance and any boat service for the property you choose.

Is this an official site?

No. This is an independent travel guide, not run by an authority, a hotel group or a tour operator. It describes areas by location and does not rank properties.
