Tutankhamun tomb (KV62): what you see and what it costs
The Tutankhamun tomb, KV62, is one of the smaller royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and one of the best known. Entry is an extra ticket: EGP 700 for adults and EGP 350 for students in 2026, on top of the basic ticket. The mummy lies in a glass case inside the tomb. The treasure found here is in the Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza, not in the valley.
Prices and the three regular tombs that the basic ticket covers are explained in the Valley of the Kings tickets guide. If you prefer a guided day on the West Bank, compare the Valley of the Kings tours.

What you see inside the tomb
A short visit with a lot of history.
The painted burial chamber
Only the walls of the burial chamber are painted. The scenes show the burial, meetings with gods and a scene from the Amduat, a text about the night journey of the sun through the underworld. Do not expect painted corridors or the wall reliefs you find in the tomb of Seti I.
The mummy
The mummy of Tutankhamun rests in a glass case in the original tomb.
A small tomb
KV62 is modest in size. If painted walls matter most to you, the best tombs in the Valley of the Kings may give you more for the money. If the discovery story matters most, this is the one.

The discovery of 1922
Three dates to keep apart.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 4 November 1922 | The first step down to the tomb is found |
| 26 November 1922 | Howard Carter looks through the opening into the antechamber |
| 16 February 1923 | The burial chamber is opened |
The tomb was found relatively intact, with about 5,000 objects. Carter did not work alone. Egyptian and international team members took part, and Lord Carnarvon funded the work. The history of the whole valley is told on the history page.

Who was Tutankhamun, and why is the tomb small?
A short reign and a modest tomb.
Tutankhamun ruled for only about 9 years, roughly 1336โ1327 BC. Chronologies differ by a few years, so treat these dates as approximate. His tomb is comparatively small, and that fits what you see: a compact burial chamber with painted walls, not the long decorated corridors of kings who ruled longer. The tomb became world famous because of what was found in it, not because of its size.
| Extra tomb | Adult price in 2026 | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| KV62, Tutankhamun | EGP 700 | The 1922 story and the mummy |
| KV9, Ramesses V and VI | EGP 220 | Corridors and astronomical ceilings |
| KV17, Seti I | EGP 2,000 | The fullest wall decoration |
For most visitors who can afford one extra, KV62 is the right choice if the story matters to you, and KV9 is the better choice if you care most about decoration.
Where the treasure is now
Tomb in Luxor, treasure near Giza.
Grand Egyptian Museum
The museum opened fully to the public in 2025, after a ceremony on 1 November 2025. The Tutankhamun galleries are there, and the outer coffin is displayed in them. For tickets and visiting tips, see the Grand Egyptian Museum guide.
Carter House and the replica
On the West Bank, the Carter House museum has been open since 2009, with a copy of the tomb on the grounds since 2014. It was restored in 2022. Entry is EGP 220 for adults and EGP 110 for students. The copy is not a second original tomb. More places on the same side of the river are on the West Bank sights page.
Visiting KV62: practical points
Photos, protection and timing.
Photos
Photos with a phone are free. Inside tombs, flash is not allowed. Professional lighting and special equipment need a permit.
Protecting the paintings
Visitors cause wear, which is why barriers, paths, lighting and ventilation were improved here. Do not touch the walls. A tip does not buy access behind a barrier.
When to go
The valley opens at 06:00 every day. An early start helps with the heat and does not guarantee an empty tomb. See the opening hours for the last entry.
Is it worth the extra ticket?
For most visitors with time for one extra ticket, KV62 is the one to choose if the 1922 story is the reason for the trip. If wall decoration comes first, choose KV9 or the tomb of Seti I instead.
