West Bank sights around the Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings is only one part of the Theban necropolis. Around it on the West Bank of Luxor lie mortuary temples, the Valley of the Queens, a workers' village and several smaller tombs. The twelve places below are a selection, not a ranking and not a route.

Most visitors see the valley, Hatshepsut Temple, Medinet Habu and the Colossi of Memnon on one day, often with a driver. A guided day trip takes care of the transport, so look at our West Bank tours if you do not want to arrange it yourself. Ticket prices and hours differ per site, and the open tombs change.

Temples and the Queens' valley

The big names on the West Bank.

1. Hatshepsut Temple

A terraced mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari with three levels, Osiris figures and cult areas for Amun, Hathor and Anubis. EGP 440, students EGP 220, open daily 06:00โ€“17:00. Details are in our Hatshepsut Temple guide.

2. Colossi of Memnon

Two giant statues of Amenhotep III that belong to the setting of his mortuary temple. They are not Ramesses II. Most visitors stop in front of them for photos; the area behind is an excavation and conservation site, so do not expect to walk the whole ground. More on the Colossi of Memnon.

3. Valley of the Queens

A separate burial ground with its own ticket: EGP 220, students EGP 110. The valley held queens, princes, princesses and early officials. The tomb of Nefertari, QV66, is currently closed, so check its status first. See the Valley of the Queens guide.

4. Medinet Habu

The mortuary temple of Ramesses III, with battle and cult scenes on its walls. EGP 220 to 230, students EGP 110, open daily from 06:00. Parking for a car costs EGP 25, a microbus EGP 50, a coaster EGP 75 and a bus EGP 100.

For most visitors with one day, the valley plus Hatshepsut Temple, Medinet Habu and a photo stop at the Colossi is the realistic plan. Treat the rest as a menu for a second day. Opening and ticket terms differ per site.

Karnak and the hot air balloon rides over the West Bank belong to the Luxor guides at Karnak Temple and Luxor hot air balloon. They are not part of the twelve.
